Ruben Banerjee is a veteran journalist with global experience. He started out as a reporter with a Hyderabad-based newspaper, NEWSTIME, before going on to work with the INDIAN EXPRESS newspaper and thereafter with INDIA TODAY MAGAZINE. He covered a vast region of the country and travelled on assignments across Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal, the North-Eastern states and adjoining countries such as Bangladesh and Nepal. In 2003, Ruben went abroad and joined the Al Jazeera as a Senior Editor, based at the television network’s global headquarters in Doha, Qatar. His stint with Al Jazeera for 12 years helped him acquire an international perspective and a deep understanding of the changes, including the Arab Spring movement that swept the Middle-East. He returned to India in the summer of 2015 and joined the Hindustan Times as its National Affairs Editor based out of New Delhi. In his new role, he leads the organisation’s national news network comprising reporters and bureaus spread across the country and shepherds its coverage across platforms – both print and online. In his long career, Ruben has covered wide-ranging subjects, from hunger and human deprivation to elections and armed conflicts, both in India and abroad. Having lived through the ‘Super Cyclone’ that hit Odisha in 1999, he authored a critically acclaimed book on the disaster: The Orissa Cyclone: A Year of Calamity. The book topped the charts in the non-fiction category for weeks and received praised from such magazines as the Time International. He is currently in the middle of working on a second book that will throw light on contemporary political history of Odisha. The book is expected to hit the stands by middle of 2018.
